Williams Syndrome Awareness Month

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a micro-deletion of chromosome 7q11. 23; and

WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome is present at birth and can affect anyone; and

WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome affects an estimated 20,000 people in the United States, and it is likely that as many as 60% of individuals with Williams Syndrome are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all; and

WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome is characterized by both medical and cognitive problems, most often cardiovascular disease, vascular issues, and mild to moderate delays in their cognitive development or ability to think and reason; and

WHEREAS, through efforts by the Williams Syndrome Association and many volunteers, by raising public awareness, funding critical research, and providing valuable support and information to families, the quality of life and future of those affected by Williams Syndrome has been increased; and

WHEREAS, the Jacey's Walk for Williams Syndrome Awareness will celebrate its 10th year in 2024, is the only Virginia event for Williams Syndrome Awareness, and continues to bring together and provide support for Virginia families affected by Williams Syndrome;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize May 2024, as WILLIAMS SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
