2008 Jubilee Celebration Chesapeake Branch National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
WHEREAS, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is committed to ending racial discrimination in our Commonwealth and to promoting racial equality, educational excellence, economic empowerment, voter participation and civil rights; and
WHEREAS, on January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared all African American slaves in the Confederate States “forever free”; and
WHEREAS, this date represents a milestone in the African-American struggle for freedom and civil rights; and
WHEREAS, the Chesapeake Branch of the NAACP’s 2008 Jubilee Celebration recognizes and honors the 145th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and acknowledges the continued importance and meaning of that historic document; and
WHEREAS, the 2008 Jubilee Celebration encourages citizens to begin the New Year with renewed vigor and hope as we continue our commitment to freedom, justice, and equality for all;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize the 2008 JUBILEE CELEBRATION of the CHESAPEAKE BRANCH of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
