Probation, Parole And Community Supervision Week
WHEREAS, the safety and well-being of the families and communities of the Commonwealth are of the utmost concern and importance to all Virginians; and
WHEREAS, Virginia maintains a system for convicted offenders to be supervised in their communities, either as a direct result of a sentence to probation, or after being released from incarceration to community supervision; and
WHEREAS, probation and parole officers are charged with the duty of helping to preserve the safety of the citizens of Virginia by maintaining contact with offenders, supervising their behavior, ensuring their strict adherence to mandated conditions and assuring their prompt arrest for non compliance of probation or parole conditions; and
WHEREAS, probation and parole officers assist offenders in becoming law abiding citizens by monitoring their behavior and by assisting them with employment, education and treatment options; and
WHEREAS, probation and parole officers contribute greatly to the criminal justice system in Virginia by supporting rehabilitative justice and helping reformed offenders become productive citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize July 19-25, 2009 as PROBATION, PAROLE AND COMMUNITY SUPERVISION WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
