Memorial Day 2006
WHEREAS, throughout the history of our great Commonwealth and nation, men and women who have worn the uniform have risked their lives to protect the interests of our country while defending our freedoms and advancing the ideals of our democracy; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is blessed to be the home of countless soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, past and present, who have shown great courage, valor and dignity, often in the face of grave danger; and
WHEREAS, on this Memorial Day the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia express their profound sympathy to the families who have lost their sons and daughters in service to their country, as we owe a huge debt to those who have died in defense of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, as we reflect upon the enormous contributions to our Commonwealth and country by our fallen heroes, it is important to note that a new generation of Virginians has come forward to advance their legacy, as they have committed themselves to becoming an integral part of the United States Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, in respect and recognition of these courageous men and women, all veterans of the U.S. Military Services, state and local government officials, educators, students, historians, and all patriotic citizens of this great state and nation are encouraged to observe Memorial Day, May 29, 2006, with appropriate ceremonies and activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize May 29, 2006, as MEMORIAL DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
