Chesapeake Bay Executive Council
In late November, Governor Kaine assumed the role of Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council when he and his other Bay state counterparts convened for their annual meeting of the Council. Several major initiatives that Bay states are committed to delivering in the near future include:
- Developing 2-year milestones for each Bay jurisdiction. These milestones will accelerate Bay restoration and detail the actions that will be taken and the amounts of pollution that will be reduced.
- Setting a new aggressive restoration end date for the multi-state Bay clean-up efforts.
- Bringing on board an outside, expert, independent evaluator that can critically and independently review and critique the actions taken and progress made by the Bay partners.
- Meeting with leaders in the Obama Administration and delivering to them a list of recommended critical actions to be taken at the federal level.
Many of these initiatives will be unveiled when the Executive Council convenes for the 2009 annual meeting on May 12 at Mount Vernon.
