Governor Kaine Announces $12.5 Million In Grants to Localities Impacted by Military Base Realignment and Closure
RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that nine grants totaling $12.5 million have been awarded to support localities being impacted by the federal 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decisions (BRAC). The grant funding was appropriated by the 2006 General Assembly and will be administered by the Virginia National Defense Industrial Authority (VNDIA).
The grants will support a variety of local initiatives that address BRAC actions in Virginia. Local programs being funded will address encroachment at or near military installations, support transportation projects aimed at easing traffic congestion around base entrances, establish BRAC transition centers to address worker and business displacement, fund historic preservation efforts, and contribute to the construction of a new elementary school.
“The grants will support military communities that are dealing with both positive and negative impacts of the 2005 BRAC round,” Governor Kaine said. “This funding represents a strategic effort to increase opportunities for additions and enhancements to defense activities in Virginia.”
“We are pleased to have this opportunity to financially address some of the challenges and opportunities that arose from 2005 BRAC round,” said VNDIA’s Grant Review & Oversight Committee chair Reta R. Busher. “The projects selected for funding in this first round represented strong cooperative efforts to enhance military operations and the quality of life for military and civilian personnel around the Commonwealth.”
