Governor Kaine Announces Reappointment of State Police Superintendent,
Parole Board Chair
– Also names additional public safety, corrections
agency directors –
RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced additional appointments to several public safety agencies.
Colonel W. Steven Flaherty of Midlothian will continue to serve as Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. Flaherty was appointed to the position in 2003, and continues a distinguished 30-year career with the Virginia State Police.
Arlington native Helen Fahey will serve as the Chair of the Virginia Parole Board. In 1993, Fahey was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and she previously served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Arlington County.
Gene M. Johnson of Emporia will serve as Director of the Department of Corrections, a position he has held since 2002. Prior to that, Johnson served as Deputy Director of Operations for the Department eight years. He has over 40 years experience in state government.
Barry R. Green of Ashland will serve as Director of the Department of Juvenile Justice, a position he has held since June 2005. Green, who previously was Deputy Secretary of Public Safety, has over 30 years of experience in state government, including five years as Deputy Director of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Walter “Mac” McFarlane of Richmond will serve as Superintendent of the Department of Correctional Education, a position he has held since 1994. Prior to that, McFarlane served as Chief Counsel and Director of Policy for Gov. Doug Wilder, and as Deputy Attorney General, and McFarlane has 37 years of experience in state government.
Dr. Paul B. Ferrara of Chesterfield County will serve as the Director of the Department of Forensic Science. Ferrara has served as Director since 1985, during which time the organization evolved from a Bureau to a Division and now into a Department. He began his 35 year career in state government as a forensic scientist in the Northern Regional Laboratory of the Bureau of Forensic Science.
