WHEREAS, Virginia's network of roads, bridges, railways, transit facilities, airports, and seaports have long been the lifeline that bind the citizens of this great commonwealth together; and
WHEREAS, an adequate and efficient transportation network is critical to our ability to move goods, people, and resources; and
WHEREAS, our ability to attract new businesses, create jobs, and ensure our continued economic prosperity is contingent upon Virginia's transportation network; and
WHEREAS, we must invest in our infrastructure to ensure that Virginia remains among the friendliest states for business in the nation; and
WHEREAS, our citizens' everyday quality of life and Virginia's position as the best state in which to work, live, and raise a family are dependent on transportation; and
WHEREAS, there are thousands of dedicated professionals all throughout Virginia working tirelessly to construct, maintain, and operate our transportation networks; and
WHEREAS, for the first time in 27 years, Virginia has recognized the need to invest in not only our transportation infrastructure, but our economic prosperity and citizens quality of life by providing these professionals with the necessary revenues to advance critical infrastructure projects all throughout our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, this additional investment will annually sustain 13,058 jobs and generate $9.5 billion in economic activity; NOW THEREFORE, I, Robert F. McDonnell, in recognition of National Transportation Week and in honor of the efforts and dedication of Virginia's transportation professionals, do hereby recognize May 14, 2013 as TRANSPORTATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call upon all Virginians to recognize the importance of our infrastructure and celebrate the efforts of our dedicated professionals who are building Virginia's road to the future.
