Domestic Violence Awareness Month
WHEREAS, the preservation of peace on our streets and in our homes and the protection of all citizens from violence are necessary in order to maintain the safety of the families and communities of our great Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s Domestic Violence Agencies sheltered 3,701 adults and 2,695 children who were attempting to flee violence, yet were forced to turn away 1,437 families due to a lack of bed space; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence occurs among people of all ages and abilities and among all economic, racial, and social backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, on an average night, 280 children stayed in Virginia domestic violence shelters in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence hotlines in Virginia responded to 58,579 calls from victims of domestic violence in 2008; and
WHEREAS, in addition to psychological and physical trauma caused by domestic violence, families and businesses across Virginia suffer serious economic loss due to medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters and foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity; and
WHEREAS, national surveys find that most Americans hold significant misperceptions about domestic violence, indicating a serious need to increase public awareness of such issues; and
WHEREAS, during the month of October, citizens of our Commonwealth are encouraged to remember domestic violence survivors and their families, promote the programs and organizations that serve them and participate in community efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize October 2009 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
