In Honor of Labor Day
WHEREAS, those working within the Commonwealth provide the fuel for our country’s economic engine with their talent, sacrifice, and dedication on the job; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to weathering these difficult economic times by helping job seekers obtain proper training, skill certification, and employment in rewarding career fields; and
WHEREAS, Virginia has regained the title as America’s Top State for Business for 2009, which includes being listed in the top ten for educational opportunities, maintaining a diverse and stable economy, and having one of the best workforces in the nation; and
WHEREAS, the primary purpose of Labor Day is to honor the achievements of working men and women by acknowledging their contributions to creating better working conditions for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Labor Day provides us all an opportunity to rest and celebrate these accomplishments while reflecting upon the value they bring to contemporary workplaces; and
WHEREAS, on September 5, 1882, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated, and Congress passed an act on June 28, 1894, declaring the first Monday of September as the Labor Day Holiday;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Timothy M. Kaine, do hereby recognize September 7, 2009 as LABOR DAY in the COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
