Food Distribution

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Office of School Nutrition Programs is committed to supporting school nutrition programs in the Commonwealth, ensuring that every Virginia child has healthy food options. Since March 2020, the Office of School Nutrition Programs has been distributing meals through community distribution sites that otherwise would have been provided in person to students in Virginia public schools. This dashboard includes information on the number of meals distributed across Virginia through the VDOE School Nutrition Programs. Click on the button below the VDOE School Nutrition logo on the side panel for more information about these food programs.

Meal Distribution

This metric is used throughout the dashboard:

The Total Meals Distributed Since March 2020: Cumulative meals from March 2020 to May 2021

Meals Distributed in May 2021: Meals distributed in the most recent month of available data

Meals Distributed “Over Time” and “By Locality”: Cumulative meals distributed from March 2020 to May 2021

Meals by Locality

Meal distribution by locality is based on the location of the School Food Authority distribution site, as provided by the Virginia Department of Education Office of School Nutrition Programs. For school distribution sites that did not distribute to a single locality (e.g., Fairfax County Public Schools, which covers both Fairfax County and Fairfax City), the allocation of meals distributed to multiple localities is based on the percentage of the distribution site’s Free and Reduced Meal Eligible Students that attend schools located in the locality. For example, in Fairfax County Public Schools, 98.3% of the Free and Reduced meal eligible students attend schools located in Fairfax County, whereas 1.7% attend schools in Fairfax City. Therefore, the map allocates 98.3% of the meals distributed through Fairfax Public Schools to Fairfax County, and 1.7% of the meals to Fairfax City.
