Governor Northam Designates May 6 – 12 as Virginia Public Service Week

Over 700,000 public sector employees in Virginia recognized

RICHMOND – Governor Ralph Northam has proclaimed the week of May 6 – 12, 2018 as Public Service Week in Virginia to celebrate the commitment and dedication of 713,000 individuals who serve the Commonwealth in federal, state and local jobs. Virginia Public Service Week coincides with the annual celebration of National Employee Recognition Week during the first full week in May.

The designation of Virginia Public Service Week celebrates the Commonwealth’s tradition of producing many talented and devoted leaders, including eight Presidents of the United States.

“I applaud the excellence of our public servants at all levels of government to serve the needs of the people of Virginia,” Governor Northam said. “From the hills of Southwest Virginia to the beaches of Tidewater, these employees work faithfully to keep the wheels of government turning.”

Countless public employees, from federal agency workers to state troopers and corrections officers, college and university professors and local government officials, work diligently every day to improve the quality of life in Virginia.

As part of recognition activities for state employees during the week, Secretary of Administration Keyanna Conner will lead a walk around Capitol Square in Richmond on May 10, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Patrick Henry Building. State agencies around the Commonwealth will hold special events and award presentations to honor employee excellence in public service.
