Governor Northam Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Block 2020 Census Citizenship Question

RICHMOND—Governor Ralph Northam today issued the following statement on the United States Supreme Court’s decision to block the citizenship question in the 2020 Census.

“The 2020 Census is too important to our democracy to have partisan interests put its accuracy at risk. The Supreme Court’s ruling that the citizenship question cannot be added, for now, is good news, but our work is not done. Every Virginian, and every American, must be counted.”

“We created the Virginia Complete Count Commission to bring leaders from all corners of our diverse Commonwealth together to develop solutions to census challenges and educate the public about the significance the 2020 Census.

“This important work will continue because there is so much at stake—from our representation in Congress to equitable funding for roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals. It is crucial that each person living in Virginia is counted to ensure every community receives a fair allocation of resources.”

Virginians are encouraged to get involved and support the efforts of the Virginia Complete Count Commission here.
