WHEREAS, The United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County has been serving the community for 62 years; and
WHEREAS, Day of Caring is the largest day of service in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham community; and
WHEREAS, volunteer efforts strengthen communities in the Commonwealth and volunteers serve with compassion; and
WHEREAS, volunteer efforts and events like Day of Caring transcend political and religious differences to unite people of all faiths, races, cultures, and backgrounds with a shared goal of helping those in need; and
WHEREAS, on this day, more than 600 local community members will volunteer throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County; and
WHEREAS, there will be more than 37 host sites and 95 projects; and
WHEREAS, the Day of Caring will begin with a kick-off breakfast and, for the first time, a keynote speaker to start the day and send volunteer teams off to their projects with a LIVE UNITED cheer; and
WHEREAS, for the first time, the entire senior class from Harrisonburg High School will join for the kick-off breakfast and 45 students will volunteer for projects; and
WHEREAS, all citizens, faith groups, businesses, and community organizations are invited to support and participate in community efforts like physical repairs, client interaction, landscaping, and office work to address critical needs in their own backyards;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 25, 2019, as the 2019 DAY OF CARING in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
