WHEREAS, more than 20 million American live with a substance use disorder (SUD); and
WHEREAS, at least 1,534 individual lives were lost to drug overdoses in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2017; and
WHEREAS, alcohol-attributable deaths and drug overdose deaths are preventable; and
WHEREAS, addiction is not a moral failing but a complex and treatable disease; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s dedicated treatment providers work tirelessly to support and empower individuals with substance use disorders to recover; and
WHEREAS, addiction treatment works and a life of recovery is possible; and
WHEREAS, Addiction Treatment Week is an opportunity for all Virginians to stand beside those with substance use disorders working toward recovery;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize April 23-29, 2018, as ADDICTION TREATMENT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
