WHEREAS, March 26, 1971, marked the day that Bangladesh declared independence; and
WHEREAS, the fabric and foundation of Virginia is enriched by the diversity of cultures and tradition represented by the residents of this great Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, immigrants, including those from Asia and Pacific Islands, have come to the United States seeking economic opportunities associated with the American dream, and have brought with them an array of cultures and traditions that enrich the heart and spirit of America; and
WHEREAS, encompassing many histories, languages, and diverse cultures while sharing common American experiences, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have achieved exceptional success in all aspects of society including business, politics, education, community service, arts, and sciences; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is proud to be home to a large and vibrant Bangladeshi population; and
WHEREAS, in honor of Bangladeshi Independence Month, a variety of community celebrations planned throughout Virginia during March will include culture, artistic, educational and historical activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize March 2018 as BANGLADESHI INDEPENDENCE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
