WHEREAS, chronic diseases affects thousands of individuals throughout Virginia and are responsible for seven out of ten deaths in the United States; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer from unpreventable and costly chronic and rare conditions, while the deadliest and costliest chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and obesity, are also the most preventable; and
WHEREAS, Chronic Disease Day promotes self-care best practices to reduce individual risk and lower national healthcare costs for everyone; and
WHEREAS, Chronic Disease Day is supported by non-profit and disease support groups including Good Days, the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation, Chronic Disease Coalition, and other non-profit organizations dedicated to assisting patients overcome challenges with access to care throughout Virginia and across the United States;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize July 10, 2019, as CHRONIC DISEASE DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
