Diaper Need Awareness Week


WHEREAS, lack of access to a sufficient supply of clean diapers can adversely affect the health and welfare of infants, toddlers, and their families; and

WHEREAS, in the United States, one in three families reports needing diapers for an infant or toddler; and

WHEREAS, there are no government assistance programs for the purchase or provision of diapers, and a sufficient supply of diapers can cost as much as six percent of a full-time minimum wage worker’s salary, therefore obtaining a sufficient supply of diapers can cause economic hardship for low-income families; and

WHEREAS, a supply of diapers is generally required for infants and toddlers to participate in quality childcare and early education programs; and

WHEREAS, addressing diaper needs can lead to economic opportunity for the state’s low-income families and can lead to improved health of our communities; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is proud to be home to the Virginia Diaper Bank Network comprised of A Small Hand, Capital Diaper Bank, Children's Diaper Bank, Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank, Mission of Hope International Diaper Bank, My Grandmother’s House Diaper Bank, Northern Virginia Diaper Bank, the Red Wagon Ministry Diaper Bank, Serve a Village Diaper Bank, and St. Bede Outreach/Hope Baby Care Diaper Bank, that recognizes the importance of diapers in helping provide economic stability for families and distributes supplies to low-income families;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 23-29, 2019, as DIAPER NEED AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
