WHEREAS, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the primary providers of publicly-funded, long-term support and service for millions of people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, DSPs provide their clients with daily living assistance that fosters a stable environment for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS, DSPs build close, respectful, and trusted relationships with their clients, their families, and their community; and
WHEREAS, DSPs are integral to helping individuals with disabilities live successfully in their communities, avoiding more costly institutional care; and
WHEREAS, the participation of DSPs in medical planning is integral to a successful transition from medical events to post-acute care and long-term support and services; and
WHEREAS, it is projected that more than one million DSPs will be needed in the United States by 2022; and
WHEREAS, DSPs deserve recognition for their hard work and the positive impact they have on these vulnerable populations throughout Virginia;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 8-14, 2019, as DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
