WHEREAS, Education and Sharing Day is celebrated on the birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in honor of his devotion to education; and
WHEREAS, education is vital to the success of our Commonwealth and nation; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia aims to educate students in the fundamental knowledge and academic subjects that they need to be capable, responsible, and self-reliant citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Rebbe stated that you should educate through love, because without love, education is “at best incomplete and at worst, destructive”; and
WHEREAS, the Rebbe believed that character and education were two vital pillars that offered critical guidance to our youth to be conscientious adults; and
WHEREAS, the 95th Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution celebrating April 18, 1978, as Education Day, U.S.A., in honor of the Rebbe’s birthday and his commitment to the advancement of education; and
WHEREAS, shortly after his death, the 103rd Congress of the United States awarded Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson the Congressional Gold Medal in “recognition of his outstanding and enduring contributions toward world education, morality, and acts of charity”; and
WHEREAS, Education and Sharing Day serves as an opportunity to honor the memory of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, and recognize the importance of education for our youth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize March 27, 2018, as EDUCATION AND SHARING DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
