WHEREAS, the Commonwealth considers the health and safety of its residents and visitors its highest priority; and
WHEREAS, Healthy and Safe Swimming Week raises public awareness of the importance of healthy and safe swimming and to reinforce education among those who operate and maintain swimming pools, water playgrounds, or hot tubs/spas, or manage fresh or marine beaches; and
WHEREAS, on behalf of the residents and visitors of Virginia, the Commonwealth is pleased to join local, state, and federal agencies in ensuring healthy and safe swimming by conducting education outreach to prevent illness and injury linked to the water residents and visitors share and swim in; and
WHEREAS, dedicated men and women are trained to ensure health and safety standards are met in the Commonwealth by conducting over 8,000 inspections of public swimming pools, water playgrounds, and hot tubs/spas and conducting weekly water testing at 45 beach sites; and
WHEREAS, the theme of Healthy and Safe Swimming Week is, “Swim Healthy, Stay Healthy,” because swimmers, parents, aquatics staff, residential pool or hot tub/spa owners, and public health officials each play a role in preventing illnesses and injury in the places residents and visitors swim; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Health provides a Healthy and Safe Swimming Virtual Toolkit at www.SwimHealthyVa.com, containing resources for the public, health practitioners, and water resource managers, to ensure all Virginia residents and visitors may stay healthy and safe throughout the swimming season;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 21-27, 2018, as HEALTHY AND SAFE SWIMMING WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
