WHEREAS, yoga is an ancient Indian tradition, which exemplifies the harmony between one and nature; and
WHEREAS, derived from Sanskrit, “yoga” means to join or unite, symbolizing the union of the mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment; and
WHEREAS, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga; and
WHEREAS, on June 16th, the Embassy of India and Friends of Yoga will celebrate the 4th annual International Day of Yoga at the United States Capitol – West Lawn in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, this event serves as an opportunity for Virginians to experience authentic Indian culture by participating in one of India’s most cherished traditions; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is proud to join citizens across the world in celebrating the International Day of Yoga;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize June 21, 2018, as the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
