WHEREAS, an invisible disability is a physical, mental, or neurological condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities, but the effects may not be inherently apparent to others; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that as many as 10% of individuals in the U.S. have a medical condition that could be considered a type of invisible disability; and
WHEREAS, invisible disabilities may include chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, major depression, and anxiety disorders; and
WHEREAS, organizations like the Invisible Disabilities Association (IDA) strive to encourage, educate, and connect people and organizations touched by illness, pain, and disability; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia joins IDA in raising awareness for Invisible Disability Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 13-19, 2019, as INVISIBLE DISABILITY WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
