WHEREAS, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution; and
WHEREAS, members of Virginia’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community play vital roles in all fields and professions contributing to a stronger Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth celebrates its diverse LGBT community, and is committed to ensuring equality for all Virginians; and
WHEREAS, in 2003, Adam Ebbin made history by being the first openly gay state legislator to serve in the Virginia General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, Dawn Adams made history by being the first openly gay woman to serve in the Virginia General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, in November 2017, Virginia made history by electing Danica Roem as the first openly transgender person to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly, and in January 2018, became the first transgender American to serve in any state legislature; and
WHEREAS, there remains much work to do to extend equality throughout the Commonwealth, but because of the acts of courage of the millions who came out and demanded justice, our Commonwealth has made great strides in recognizing that love is love and that no person should be judged by anything but the content of their character; and
WHEREAS, my first Executive Order as Governor was a policy specifically prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, political affiliation, or against otherwise qualified persons with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, during LGBT Pride Month, the Commonwealth of Virginia joins the nation in celebrating LGBT Americans, their struggle, and all their contributions to our communities, and we acknowledge that we must do more to create a more open and welcoming Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize June 2018 as LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
