WHEREAS, there are approximately 1.9 million adults in the Commonwealth who are over 60 years old, and this population will expand to 2.3 million by 2030; and
WHEREAS,the Commonwealth is committed to supporting older adults, their families, and their caregivers; and
WHEREAS, for 55 years, Older Americans Month, led by the U.S. Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, has been observed every May and this year’s theme is “Engage at Every Age;” and
WHEREAS, remaining socially engaged can enrich the lives of individuals of every age; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Area Agencies on Aging and Senior or Active Lifestyle Centers, integral parts of Virginia’s aging network for wellness and supportive services, have welcomed this year’s theme and will raise the importance of community engagement this May in celebratory luncheons and picnics, volunteer recognition, a Creative Aging Festival, an exercise challenge, and critical fundraising activities such as a walkathon and a Kentucky Derby Gala; and
WHEREAS, the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, in collaboration with state level and community partners, is responsible for planning and oversight of aging, disability, adult, and adult protective services that make community living a reality for more older adults;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2018 as OLDER VIRGINIANS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
