WHEREAS, licensed professional engineers are dedicated to applying scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, societal, and commercial problems while holding paramount the public health, safety, and welfare; and
WHEREAS, in order to a become licensed professional engineer, one must complete a four-year college degree, work under a professional engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams, and earn a license from Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation; and
WHEREAS, professional engineers must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their career to retain their licenses; and
WHEREAS, licensed professional engineers have made substantial contributions to Virginia’s economy; and
WHEREAS, Professional Engineers Day celebrates the many accomplishments of Virginia’s professional engineers, and encourages children and young adults to further their education in the field of engineering;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize August 1, 2018, as PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
