WHEREAS, the first School Library Month was celebrated in 1985 by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and has been celebrated nationally in April ever since; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of School Librarians, a state affiliate of the national association (AASL), works to support effective school library programs across the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, learning to become effective users of information and ideas is essential as Virginia’s youth prepare for a future characterized by change; and
WHEREAS, school libraries provide access to information within school and to resources outside of school; and
WHEREAS, school librarians play a vital role in the teaching and learning process; and
WHEREAS, promoting competencies in new and developing technologies is an integral part of school library programs; and
WHEREAS, school library programs promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, and listening; and
WHEREAS, school library programs are an important asset in the education of the Commonwealth’s youth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize April 2018 as SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
