WHEREAS, proper onsite sewage system use and routine care are vital to protecting public health, preserving our highly valued groundwater, lakes, streams and waterways, and avoiding costly repairs that can result from neglect; and
WHEREAS, 28 percent of Virginia residents rely on onsite sewage systems to treat wastewater from homes and businesses; and
WHEREAS, wastewater professionals in the Commonwealth of Virginia use their expertise in the design, installation, maintenance, and regulation of septic systems; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SepticSmart program used by Virginia health officials educates homeowners about the need for proper onsite sewage system use and routine maintenance; and
WHEREAS, Virginia residents and the environment of Virginia benefit from properly designed, installed, operated, and maintained onsite sewage systems;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 16-20, 2019, as SEPTICSMART WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
