WHEREAS, technology and its creators are rapidly reshaping our economy, society, and world; and
WHEREAS, Virginia was recently named the “Best State for Business” in recognition of our growing technology sector and world-class workforce; and
WHEREAS, Northern Virginia has the most cybersecurity opportunities of any region in the United States; and
WHEREAS, with 112,000 technology job openings in the last year, Northern Virginia surpasses Seattle in overall demand for STEM talent; and
WHEREAS, much of our top-tier technology talent is the product of Virginia’s state-supported education system; and
WHEREAS, as the Commonwealth continues its transition to a knowledge-based economy, it is crucial that we cultivate and expand Virginia’s next generation of innovators; and
WHEREAS, Virginia’s educators are already rising to the challenge by incorporating computer literacy into the curriculum for every grade and degree; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth’s business community is also committed to creating a tech talent pipeline and provides countless internship opportunities, allowing many students to gain crucial hands-on experience before graduation; and
WHEREAS, with our unparalleled talent and partnerships, Virginia is and will remain a global hub for progress, innovation, and entrepreneurship;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 9-13, 2019, as TECH TALENT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
