WHEREAS, try transit week encourages Virginians to try public transportation options such as buses, vanpools, rail services, or ferry service; and
WHEREAS, investment in transit services increases commercial activity and residential property value, and creates and supports thousands of jobs; and
WHEREAS, public transit services have proven economic value for communities, and connect Virginians to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, public transit mitigates congestion by reducing the number of cars on the highways and produces significantly less air pollution per passenger mile than a single occupancy vehicle; and
WHEREAS, transit is a preferred mode of travel for many Virginians and provides a vital service for the disabled, the elderly, and those who cannot or choose not to drive; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Rail and Public Transportation is devoted to improving the mobility of people and goods while expanding transportation choices in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to supporting and promoting the use of public transportation options throughout Virginia based on the many benefits that transit can provide;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 16-20, 2019, as TRY TRANSIT WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
