WHEREAS, there are approximately 112,000 dedicated registered nurses in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the registered nursing profession meets the emerging healthcare needs of Virginia’s citizens in a wide range of settings; and
WHEREAS, professional nursing is an indispensable component in the safety and quality of care of hospitalized patients; and
WHEREAS, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia nurses have been an unwavering, frontline force against the virus through their tireless service to their patients; and
WHEREAS, the demand for registered nursing services will be greater than ever because of the growing population; and
WHEREAS, more qualified registered nurses will be needed in the future to meet the increasingly complex needs of healthcare consumers; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Nurses Association, along with the American Nurses Association, has declared the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week in celebration of the over four million nurses who protect and promote the health of their communities nationwide;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 6-12, 2020, as VIRGINIA NURSES WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
