WHEREAS, earth sciences are fundamental to the safety, health, environmental security, and economy of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, earth sciences are important to the conservation and development of energy, mineral, and agricultural resources needed for Virginia’s future growth; and
WHEREAS, earth sciences help reduce losses from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and shoreline erosion; and
WHEREAS, earth sciences help us better understand and manage human interaction with the planet's natural systems and processes; and
WHEREAS, the American Geosciences Institute has organized Earth Science Week since 1998 to help the public gain a better understanding of the earth sciences; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Materials in Our Lives," the theme of Earth Science Week 2020, encourages young people to recognize and explore the multitude of ways materials sourced from the Earth shape our daily experience; and
WHEREAS, Earth Science Week is an opportunity to celebrate the earth sciences and to encourage environmental stewardship;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 11-17, 2020, as EARTH SCIENCE WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
