WHEREAS, in 2019, there were 2.3 million home care workers nationally; and
WHEREAS, there are over 50,000 home care workers in the Commonwealth of Virginia empowering our communities’ older adults and people with disabilities to live with dignity; and
WHEREAS, with more than 10,000 people in America turning 65 each day, the skyrocketing demand for in-home care has made home care work one of the fastest growing professions in the country; and
WHEREAS, home care workers do some of the most important, frontline healthcare work in our communities; and
WHEREAS, home care workers perform their duties with grace and professionalism to improve the lives of those in our communities who need in-home care; and
WHEREAS, these compassionate workers provide essential direct, hands-on care — such as bathing, dressing, toileting, preparing meals, administering medications and in-home treatments, and companionship — that ensure Virginia’s parents, grandparents and loved ones with disabilities can live independently at home; and
WHEREAS, nationally, home care workers are as diverse as those they serve — 87 percent are women, more than half are women of color and three in ten are immigrants; and
WHEREAS, the work home care workers perform to serve and support their client(s) can be challenging, but the compassion and unconditional care exhibited by home care workers and the genuine love they have for their clients keeps our communities strong; and
WHEREAS, home care workers believe that everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from, should have access to high-quality long term care; and
WHEREAS, home care workers are uniting together to advocate for the living wages, affordable health care, paid leave, and PPE they need to care for themselves and their families, while they care for others;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 4, 2020, as HOME CARE DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
