Strengthen the Spirit of Virginia

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Month
WHEREAS, Interstitial Cystitis, also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS), is a chronic and often debilitating condition characterized by recurring pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, often accompanied by urinary frequency and urgency; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that as many as 12 million Americans are affected by IC/BPS, including 3 to 8 million women and 1 to 4 million men; and
WHEREAS, the underlying cause of IC/BPS remains unknown, and there is currently no cure; and
WHEREAS, diagnosing IC/BPS can be difficult and time-consuming, as there is no definitive test for the condition, and treatment plans vary widely in effectiveness from patient to patient; and
WHEREAS, individuals living with IC/BPS can experience chronic pain that significantly impacts their daily activities, mental and emotional well-being, and ability to work or maintain a typical quality of life; and
WHEREAS, patients with IC/BPS have historically faced stigma, misunderstanding, and a lack of recognition for the severity or legitimacy of their condition; and
WHEREAS, Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for IC/BPS education and research funding, while encouraging a supportive community for those affected by IC/BPS;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize September 2025, as INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
