100th Anniversary of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown


WHEREAS, on August 7, 1918, the site of the weapons station was acquired for the Navy by a presidential proclamation, and was the largest naval installation in the world; and

WHEREAS, on August 7, 1958, on the Station’s 40th anniversary, the name was changed to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown; and

WHEREAS, Cheatham Annex, founded as a Seabee training base in 1943, became an annex of Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, Norfolk, and was incorporated into the Naval Weapons Station on October 1, 1998; and

WHEREAS, the installation provides employment to over 5,000 Sailors, Marines, and civilians; and

WHEREAS, the installation contributes over $280 million annually in direct economic impact; and

WHEREAS, the installation and its tenant commands continue to provide critical fleet ordnance support for the Navy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize August 10, 2018, as the 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF NAVAL WEAPONS STATION YORKTOWN in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
