WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is launching the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution to build awareness of Virginia’s role in the creation of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Virginia will host a year-long commemoration entitled “2019 Commemoration, American Evolution,” which recognizes the 400th anniversary of key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today; and
WHEREAS, 1619 was a pivotal year in the establishment of Virginia, as Virginia was the first permanent English Colony in North America; and
WHEREAS, 1619 was also the year of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World, the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of English Women in significant numbers, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America, and the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia Colony; and
WHEREAS, the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution includes featured events, programs, and legacy projects that inspire local, national and international engagement in the themes of democracy, diversity, and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution will partner with notable Virginia institutions and national partners to inspire local, national, and international engagement and to reinforce Virginia’s leadership in education, tourism, and economic development; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is honored to host the landmark 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, which offers honest historical perspectives and empowers and motivates Virginians and Americans, both current and future generations, to take an active role in shaping the course of our nation’s future;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 17, 2018, as the 2019 COMMEMORATION, AMERICAN EVOLUTION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
