WHEREAS, on November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corps was established by the Continental Marine Act; and
WHEREAS, for 246 years, the United States Marine Corps has answered the call of duty in times of war and peace in order to preserve democracy both at home and abroad, to fight for our nation’s common causes and defend our freedom; and
WHEREAS, more than 11,000 active duty Marine Corps service members, over 1,900 members of the Marine Corps Reserve, and their families are stationed in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, these service members and over 5,400 civilian workers support our national security and protect our freedoms at Marine Corp Base Quantico, Henderson Hall, the Pentagon, and other locations; and
WHEREAS, today, we celebrate the continued strength, professionalism, and endurance of the United States Marine Corps;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize November 10, 2021, as the 246th BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
