WHEREAS, African diaspora is the mass dispersion of people from Africa during the Transatlantic Slave Trade; and
WHEREAS, the African diaspora took millions of people from Western and Central Africa to different regions throughout the Americas and the Caribbean;
WHEREAS, the modern African diaspora consists of the millions of people of African descent living in various societies who are united by a past based upon racial oppression and the struggles against it; and
WHEREAS, the African diaspora has contributed to the economic development of many countries, as well as to social, cultural, and political innovations of global significance; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia encourages residents to work together to empower the voices and experiences of historically marginalized and underrepresented communities, and is dedicated to embracing and promoting our diverse cultural backgrounds;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 2021 as AFRICAN DIASPORA MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
