WHEREAS, on May 15, 2021, Virginians will honor and recognize the courage and dedication of the nation’s military service men and women; and
WHEREAS, President Truman established a single holiday to recognize and honor individuals who defend our nation both at home and abroad; and
WHEREAS, on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day and citizens across the United States thanked all of our military branches in one day; and
WHEREAS, Virginians welcome the opportunity to pay special tribute to the brave men and women who keep our nation safe every day; and
WHEREAS, on this day, citizens of the Commonwealth express their gratitude to those who protect the freedoms that our country enjoys;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 15, 2021, as ARMED FORCES DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
