WHEREAS, Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, which is celebrated the first full calendar week after Valentine’s Day, was created to increase awareness, visibility, and acceptance of aromantic spectrum identities; and
WHEREAS, a goal of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week is to educate and acknowledge that aromanticism is a romantic orientation for those who experience little or no romantic attraction; and
WHEREAS, since aromanticism is often an unknown and misunderstood romantic orientation, it is imperative that we challenge beliefs and assumptions about those who identify as aromantic; and
WHEREAS, because aromanticism remains generally unknown and unrecognized, people who identify as aromantic may often feel isolated and confused, and lack access to resources and support networks; and
WHEREAS, discovering aromanticism can be an affirming and positive life-changing experience and can lead to greater acceptance of one’s body, needs, and happiness; and
WHEREAS, having peers, family, and community members who know of and understand aromanticism can provide safety, support, and comfort to aromantic people; and
WHEREAS, those who identify as aromantic should be acknowledged, accepted, and validated; and
WHEREAS, Aromantic Spectrum Awareness week aims to spread awareness and acceptance of aromantic spectrum identifies and the challenges faced by the aromantic community; and
WHEREAS, our Commonwealth is proud of and strengthened by the rich diversity of Virginians of all identities and will continue to advocate for and promote inclusion;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize February 21-27, 2021, as
AROMANTIC SPECTRUM AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
