Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

WHEREAS, the growing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in Virginia plays an essential role in shaping and advancing the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, AAPI men and women contribute to our communities in all areas of life in Virginia, including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, law enforcement, and the military; and

WHEREAS, AAPI men and women lend their rich heritage to enhancing the Commonwealth as educators, activists, artists, elected officials, service men and women, and entrepreneurs; and

WHEREAS, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community’s long and deeply-rooted legacy in both the United States and Virginia reminds us of proud and painful chapters of our history; and

WHEREAS, diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and by recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of the Asian and Pacific Americans, our Commonwealth celebrates the importance of inclusion to build a brighter future for all of our citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure that Virginia is welcoming to all people, maintaining a world class public education system, and building a more diverse economy; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the hundreds of thousands of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Virginia who strengthen Virginia’s economy, enrich the Commonwealth’s diverse culture, and invigorate our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2018 as ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
