Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

WHEREAS, Virginia is proud to be home to a large Asian American and Pacific Islander population that contributes greatly to shaping, advancing, and enriching our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, for over a century, Asian American and Pacific Islander men and women have made valuable contributions to all areas of life in Virginia, including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, law enforcement, and the military; and

WHEREAS, the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are long and deeply-rooted in both the United States and Virginia, reminding us of proud and painful chapters of our history; and

WHEREAS, the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Virginia have shared their rich culture and traditions with neighbors and friends while setting examples as model citizens and public servants; and

WHEREAS, diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and by recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of Asian American and Pacific Islander men and women, our Commonwealth celebrates the importance of inclusion to build a brighter future for all of our citizens; and 

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure that Virginia is welcoming to all people, maintaining a world class public education system, and building a more diverse economy; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is proud to celebrate the annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and commemorate the essential contributions, sacrifices, and accomplishments that Asian American and Pacific Islanders have made to Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2019 as ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
