WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and visitors; and
WHEREAS, a sufficient supply of safe blood is vital for the Commonwealth, as blood transfusions are needed for women who experience complications from pregnancy, children with severe anemia, individuals who experience severe trauma, complex medical and surgical procedures, cancer patients, and various other ailments; and
WHEREAS, one blood donation can potentially save up to three lives; and
WHEREAS, although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, fewer than 10% actually do; and
WHEREAS, nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is home to a number of committed organizations that collect blood donations, including the American Red Cross, Virginia Blood Services, and many others; and
WHEREAS, Blood Donation Day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood and replenishing our Commonwealth’s blood supply;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 5, 2018, as BLOOD DONATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
