WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state; and
WHEREAS, a sufficient supply of safe blood is a public health issue, as our hospitals and medical centers need an available supply for blood transfusions, individuals with severe anemia, individuals who experience severe trauma, complex medical and surgical procedures, cancer patients, and various other issues; and
WHEREAS, one blood donation can potentially save up to three lives; and
WHEREAS, although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, fewer than 10% actually do; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is home to a number of committed organizations that collect blood donations, including the American Red Cross, Virginia Blood Services, and many others; and
WHEREAS, Blood Donation Day serves as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of replenishing our Commonwealth’s blood supply through donating blood;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 5, 2019, as BLOOD DONATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
