WHEREAS, Virginians are afflicted each year with diseases or disorders of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system, which cause disabilities, diminished quality of life, and large economic burdens; and
WHEREAS, those affected by neurological and psychological diseases and disorders are helped by the tremendous scientific breakthroughs in biomedical and neuroscience research coupled with the dedication of health care workers in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, scientific breakthroughs in the field of neuroscience have benefited individuals afflicted with spinal cord injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, Parkinson’s disease, drug addiction, and other life threatening disorders; and
WHEREAS, the Society for Neuroscience is the world’s largest organization of scientists dedicated to the study of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system; and
WHEREAS, Brain Awareness Week is an opportunity to enhance public education and awareness about brain disorders and the advancements made in neuroscience research;
NOW, THEREFORE,I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize March 12-18, 2018, as BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
