Chronic Disease Day


WHEREAS, six in ten adults in the United States suffer from a chronic disease, and four in ten suffer from two or more chronic diseases; and

WHEREAS, chronic diseases account for seven out of the top ten leading causes of premature death in the United States; and

WHEREAS, many of the deadliest and costliest Chronic diseases, such as Type Two Diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease are also the most preventable; and

WHEREAS, one can dramatically decrease the risk of contracting a chronic disease by avoiding the use of tobacco, minimizing alcohol intake, ensuring proper nutrition and exercise, and following a healthy lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, screening for chronic diseases by medical professionals is a great preventative measure individuals can take to avoid developing such diseases; and

WHEREAS, Chronic Disease Day promotes awareness in hopes of reducing individual risk and lowering the rate of chronic disease in the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize July 10, 2021 as CHRONIC DISEASE DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
