WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis, commonly referred to as CF, is an inherited disease of the secretory glands that make mucus and sweat; and
WHEREAS, individuals with CF have mucus that builds up and blocks their airways, causing bacteria to develop into serious lung infections over time; and
WHEREAS, CF also causes sweat to become very salty, which can lead to a deficiency; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, CF occurs in about 1 in 2,500 to 3,500 Caucasian newborns, 1 in 17,000 African American newborns, and 1 in 31,000 Asian American newborns; and
WHEREAS, spreading awareness of CF improves the length and quality of life of people living with CF; and
WHEREAS, Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase awareness about CF and to encourage continued research for a cure;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2018 as CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
