Drug Court Month

WHEREAS, drug court is a judicially-supervised, cost-effective, collaborative approach to addressing the needs of individuals with substance abuse disorders; and

WHEREAS, drug courts promote public safety, ensure accountability, and help court-involved individuals back onto their feet; and

WHEREAS, drug courts combine judicial accountability and evidence-based practices to effectively intervene in substance abuse and related crimes; and

WHEREAS, drug courts provide focus and leadership for community-wide partnerships, bringing together public safety and public health professionals in the fight against substance abuse and criminality; and

WHEREAS, drug court graduates reduce costs incurred by the Commonwealth, lower recidivism rates, and offer better employment outcomes to individuals compared with those who complete probation and jail; and

WHEREAS, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, substance abuse and rehabilitation professionals, law enforcement and community supervision personnel, researchers and educators, and others dedicated to drug courts are improving lives and restoring communities across our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to implementing strategies that prevent drug abuse and help people with addiction get the treatment they need to recover;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize May 2018 as DRUG COURT MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
