Feed Virginia Day of Action

WHEREAS, Virginia is committed to improving food security in every part of the Commonwealth, and providing aid to Virginians in need; and

WHEREAS, as many as one in eight Virginia children may not know where their next meal will come from; and

WHEREAS, it is critical for Virginians, especially children, to have access to nutritious, affordable, and locally-sourced foods to enable them to grow, learn, and succeed; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s Children’s Cabinet is working collaboratively with leaders in health, education, agriculture, and public safety to direct and prioritize the resources and activities related to agriculture and food nutrition programs to leverage new and current strategies addressing food insecurity; and

WHEREAS, the work of state agencies, community-based organizations, and partners has focused on eliminating child hunger and promoting access to healthy foods through local agricultural strategies and facilitating programs to promote food access and health; and

WHEREAS, it is critical to raise public awareness of hunger and access to affordable healthy food throughout communities in Virginia, and to share the importance of collaboration and partnerships in the work of food access; and

WHEREAS, to promote community action against hunger across Virginia, organizations such as food banks, schools, farms, nonprofits, and others will mobilize volunteers on September 13th in events designed to support food access and strengthen connections throughout the food system; and

WHEREAS, as Virginia’s food system continues to collaborate and innovate, our Commonwealth’s citizens become more engaged with both our food and our neighbors in need, leading to better lives for all Virginia families;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize September 13, 2018, as FEED VIRGINIA DAY OF ACTION in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
