Filipino American History Month


WHEREAS, Virginia is proud to be home to a large Filipino American population that contributes greatly to shaping, advancing, and enriching our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the earliest Filipinos arrived at Morro Bay, California, in the 16th century; and

WHEREAS, on November 2009, The United States Congress passed a resolution to officially recognize October as Filipino American History Month; and

WHEREAS, Filipino men and women have made valuable contributions to all areas of life in Virginia and the United States, including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, law enforcement, and the military; and

WHEREAS, the Filipino American communities in Virginia have shared their rich culture and traditions with neighbors and friends while setting examples as model citizens and public servants; and

WHEREAS, diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and by recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of Filipino American men and women, our Commonwealth celebrates the importance of inclusion to build a brighter future for all of our citizens; and 

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is proud to celebrate Filipino American History Month, and commemorate the essential contributions, sacrifices, and accomplishments that Filipino Americans have made to Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 2019 as FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
