Friends Association For Children’s 150th Anniversary


WHEREAS, Friends Association for Children, originally established as Friends Asylum for Colored Orphans in 1871, is one of the oldest non-profit organizations in the Central Virginia region; and

WHEREAS, Friends Association for Children was originally founded by a former slave, Mrs. Lucy Goode Brooks, and initially served children and families displaced by slavery and the civil war; and

WHEREAS, they eventually transitioned to provide adoption and foster care services to all children and families throughout Richmond; and

WHEREAS, currently, Friends Association for Children provides early care and education to prepare children for educational and lifelong success; and

WHEREAS, Friends Association for Children has served thousands of Virginia’s children and families over multiple generations; and

WHEREAS, Friends Association for Children, in partnership with the City of Richmond and other stakeholders, has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic to serve the children of first responders, essential emergency workers, and the community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph S. Northam, do hereby recognize October 2021 as FRIENDS ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
